In Hungary you should experience at least one thermal bath. Head back on Highway 3 south and get off at Miskolctapolca. From there, follow the signs for the Barlangfürdö. You enter through a triangular tower to the open pools, or through a stained glass foyer to the inside baths. This natural thermal cave has been hailed as one of the natural healing centers of Hungary, and it’s unique in Europe for its even circulating water through the tunnel cave. There is plenty of room and high ceilings. And it’s fun. Arock tunnel (slightly modified to allow for modern swimming and safe wading) follows an artificial current created with water jets, to take you through passages with romantic indirect lighting from beneath the water and above from the cave walls. This leads you to two lake pools. There are actually seven pools in all. In addition, there are adventure pools, artificial waterfalls, and a constant temperature of 30°C/86°F. Options include mud baths, manicures, and beauty treatments in the salon while the kids jump in the children’s pool, or enjoy the grassy lawns and patio. Bring an umbrella and blanket; or eat in the restaurant. The water has been proven effective in the treatment of articular, rheumatic and cardiovascular diseases. At the same time, the extraordinarily germ-free clear air of the cave has a phenomenal effect upon the respiratory tract. But, most people come here for the sheer fun and novelty of it. Several hotels are within walking distance and range in price from about $20 a day to over $100 at some medicinal wellness hotels. After spending a few days in the healing waters, we are ready for the hills. So we head back to Miskolc, and from there to Diósgyõr.
